Health Consumers Queensland is seeking four (4) Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health consumers, community members and carers who would like to host a yarning circle in the Torres and Cape region to help shape healthcare in the area.

To assist First Nations community to have a say in the implementation of the  Health Equity Strategy, Health Consumers Queensland is seeking four Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander people who would like to host a yarning circle with up to 10 local community members in the following regions:

  • Northern Peninsula Area
  • Aurukun
  • Pormpuraaw
  • Kowanyama

Why your voice and the voice of the community is important

The voices, leadership and lived experiences of First Nations peoples are driving the health equity reform agenda in Queensland. The health equity agenda is the legislative requirement passed by the Queensland Parliament in 2020 for Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) to co-develop and co-implement Health Equity Strategies.

These strategies will outline:

  • the achievement of health equity and the improvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes
  • the elimination of institutional racism from the public health sector, and
  • improvements in power sharing arrangements with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This opportunity would suit people who:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Have strong local networks and connections
  • Have an interest in improving healthcare for their young people and their community.
