Health Consumers Queenslanders invites 20 consumers and/or carers to host a discussion with members of your community to learn about their experiences with care at end of life.

Sometimes, the treatment and care provided to those who have been diagnosed with a life limiting condition (including advanced disease and frailty) does not align with the wishes and values of those who receive it. This project seeks to understand what high and low value care means to consumers, in addition to better understanding how consumers can be empowered to participate in decisions about treatment and care that is right for them.

Understanding the needs of the consumer, right from the point of diagnosis of a life limiting condition, is essential for developing strategies that ensure the delivery of high benefit, patient centred care at end of life.

About Kitchen Table Discussions

Kitchen Table Discussions are a way for consumers and/or carers to lead consultation with their own community.

These community engagement sessions led by local people for local people allow small groups to participate in discussions at a time of day that suits them. The discussions enable health consumers, carers and community members who do not ordinarily participate in healthcare consultation to have their say in a safe and supportive environment.

Full training and support is provided.

Role of the Discussion Host

As the host, your role will be to plan, coordinate and host a once-only 90-minute discussion with community members. This includes:

  • Inviting members of your community who would be interested in being part of the discussion on care at end of life.
  • Choosing a time, date and venue between 30th March and 15th April, that works for your participants.
  • Host the session.
  • Complete and provide the discussion feedback to Health Consumers Queensland by 19 April.

We would like our hosts to have strong community connections and be able to reach out to people who have experience of care at end of life for family members or loved ones.
