General practice accreditation is voluntary in Australia and is designed to support implementation of processes and systems to improve the quality of care for patients attending accredited general practices. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) develops the Standards for General Practices against which practices are assessed for accreditation.

The National General Practice Accreditation Scheme (the Scheme) supports the consistent assessment of Australian general practices against the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for general practice. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission), in collaboration with the RACGP, developed the National General Practice Accreditation Scheme, which commenced on 1 January 2017.

The National General Practice Accreditation Scheme:

  • provides greater choice for general practices seeking accreditation
  • improves support programs for implementation of accreditation
  • includes access to national de-identified data on accreditation performance to enable practices to benchmark themselves.

The General Practice Accreditation Coordinating Committee (the Coordinating Committee) has been established to provide oversight and input on issues relating to the implementation and assessment of the RACGP Standards for general practices as part of the National General Practice Accreditation Scheme. The Committee provides oversight to the coordination of general practice accreditation by:

  • Identifying issues of concern to the RACGP, the Commission, general practices, the Department, accrediting agencies and other relevant bodies relating to the implementation of the General Practice Accreditation Scheme
  • Discussing and identifying actions the members can take to progress these issues
  • Recommending actions to be progressed by the RACGP, the Commission or accrediting agencies
  • Working collaboratively to implement agreed strategies, processes and/or solutions
  • Reviewing and interpreting accreditation outcomes data
  • Reviewing accreditation evidence data that is collected and reported
  • Providing input into the accrediting agency approval process and the accrediting agency performance review process
  • Identifying opportunities to achieve consistency of accreditation processes and, if appropriate, making recommendations for improvement to the relevant body or organisation with responsibility
  • Providing a network for sharing of information on regulatory policies and processes, professional issues, standards for accreditation and the General
  • Practice Accreditation Scheme
  • Reporting on de-identified general practice accreditation outcome information to the Department
  • Providing oversight to any appeals processes.
  • Identifying opportunities to engage consumers and seek feedback to enhance the accreditation process.

About the Appointment 

The appointment is for an eighteen month term, from 15 June 2019 to 31 December 2020. The work consists of quarterly two hour long meetings.  Three of the meetings will take place via teleconference and one will be a face-to-face meeting.  The venue for face-to-face meetings will be on a rotational basis to include the Commission offices located in Sydney and RACGP offices in Melbourne.  A schedule of meetings will be agreed with Members prior to the beginning of each calendar year. The next meeting date has yet to be confirmed but expected to take place mid-June.  Please note that sitting fees, travel, accommodation and related expenses will be paid by the Commission.

CHF invites expressions of interest from consumer representatives by midnight AEST on Sunday 21 April 2019. Interested consumer representatives will need to:

  • Complete a CHF nomination form available here
  • Attach a letter of endorsement from a supporting health consumer organisation and/or provide sound demonstration of your links with a consumer base. This information ensures that consumer representatives are accountable to consumers. Please note that the health consumer group need not be a CHF member. This process ensures consumer representatives are placed with the confidence of consumers and have in place a consultative base enabling reps to draw from and report to consumers
  • Attach a short CV (no longer than two pages) in pdf format which may be forwarded to the ASQHC.
